Board Strength and ECT Equivalence, Fluting and GCMI
The Mullen Burst Test will tell you how many pounds of pressure are needed on a square inch of board for it to burst through. This information will help you choose the right board for your project. However, if you want to choose to use a board that has more recycled fibers in it and will offer you similar carton weight limits and save around 3% in costs ECT is the way to go.
As far as direct printing goes (flexographic printing plates which lay ink directly onto board during manufacturing) it is good to keep in mind that there are limited FREE inks on press called GCMI which have PMS equivalents. If your company uses a PMS color for your branding it is possible that it has a matching GCMI which will save you $150 per bucket. Below you can find a chart for these colors for quick reference.
